Facilitation, comes from the Latin word, facilis, which means simple or easy, so therefore the role of a facilitator, working with groups, is to help the group come to solutions more easily, or simply, by helping them to organise their thoughts, in a creative, innovative and safe environment working towards a common goal.
There are a number of participatory approaches that help to creating an environment where participants can collaborate, communicate, and make decisions more effectively. Without a facilitator, many groups can struggle to make progress, but with a skilled facilitator, the group can stay on track and accomplish great things.
A facilitator has many hats during a facilitated session, where the role is to set the agenda, guide the process, keep people on track and on time, encourage all in the workshop to participate, create a safe and inclusive environment, and ensure that everyone has a voice, have a voice by managing the group dynamics.
The qualities required for a facilitator to be effective are, active listening, empathy, adaptability, clear communication and where required, assertiveness.
